Crafting Connections: How the Red Cross Supports Veterans on the Road to Recovery

In March of 2023, the Utah American Red Cross Service to Armed Forces (SAF) team embarked on a remarkable journey of compassion and support. This journey, in the form of bi-weekly recreational craft programs, has brought light and joy into the lives of veterans battling addictive behavior issues at the Salt Lake City VA Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP). The program has not only been well-received by veterans but has also created a warm and inviting environment where these heroes find solace and friendship.
A Listening Ear and a Caring Heart
One of the program's lead volunteers, Darlene Spencer, shared her perspective on this remarkable initiative. When asked about the specifics of the program, she humbly admitted that her focus lies in offering unwavering support to the veterans, stating, “The program has Veterans who need support and friendship. They need to know that we see them, and that we're listening.”
In the SARRTP program, the veterans need not answer personal or intrusive questions about their past or circumstances. Instead, they find solace in the presence of volunteers who genuinely care about their well-being; as Darlene shared, "They might talk about where they served, and what they did. We never ask. It's just about being there in the moment." This simple act of being present, without judgment or curiosity, has a profound impact on the veterans.
The Qualities of a Compassionate Volunteer
Volunteers play a crucial role in making the program a success. When asked about the ideal qualities for a volunteer, Darlene mentioned the importance of being a good listener. The ability to lend a listening ear and offering a friendly, patient, and kind demeanor are the qualities that stand out.
In the world of the Red Cross, it's not about the volunteers; it's about the people they are helping. Sometimes, even the volunteers become the learners, as the veterans occasionally take on the role of teachers, sharing their knowledge and crafting skills.
Success for the Veterans and Volunteers
Julie Wood, a long time SAF volunteer and recent participant in the SARRTP program expressed, “I love seeing how excited they are to see us. They are always so polite. Watching them let loose and relax while painting or doing crafts is very awesome.”
She further conveyed the fulfillment in creating an environment where veterans can freely engage, share, and request specific supplies or classes they enjoy, leading them further to the bittersweet day they won’t be able to attend the next class as they’ve completed the program and are moving forward in their life, having made progress in their recovery journey.
These moments are a testament to the positive impact of the program, as the volunteers rejoice in their shared victory of helping veterans to success.
