Chanel Combs, a Red Cross phlebotomist in Seattle, is being recognized during Phlebotomist Recognition Week.

“I saw a lot of children who didn’t make it out of the cancer ward.” Chanel Combs grew up visiting the children’s hospital where her brother was treated for cancer. He required multiple transfusions and survived.
Blood transfusions have shaped Chanel’s life in other ways too. When she was younger, her mother faced a medical emergency and lost a significant amount of blood. Transfusions saved her life, and she still needs them from time to time.
“That’s why I decided to become a phlebotomist,” said Chanel, who is approaching her one-year anniversary with the American Red Cross. She wanted to meet and care for the blood donors who give so much to people they may never know.
Serving as a phlebotomist is her way of saying thank you to the donors who helped save her loved ones. “I’m trying to make a difference and help somebody else,” she said.
The American Red Cross recognizes dedicated professionals like Chanel during Phlebotomist Recognition week, Feb. 9-13. Phlebotomists play a vital role in our blood collection efforts, working at community blood drives and fixed donation centers.
“It’s just amazing to see so many people go out of their way to try and make an impact, to say, ‘I want to donate and help somebody else,’” Chanel said. She is grateful for every single person who rolls up their sleeve. At the Seattle Blood Donation Center she treats every donor like a friend, even on the challenging days.
Phlebotomy can be demanding work that requires precision, attention to detail and deep empathy. “Sometimes it’s hard to find the vein, so it can be stressful,” she said. Still, she approaches each donor with gentle friendliness. She helps first-time donors feel at ease and aims to make everyone feel calm and cared for.
“I like to get to know people,” she said. “We don’t have a long time to talk, but I noticed if you talk to them, they will ease into the conversation and feel more comfortable.”
Chanel understands the impact of giving blood, since her loved ones wouldn’t be here without that generosity. She gives back by bringing humanity, compassion, and connection to every person she meets.
