During Black History Month, the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region celebrates the trailblazers whose remarkable achievements and enduring legacies inspire and shape our organization. This February, we also honor the everyday heroes among us during Phlebotomist Week, February 10–14, by recognizing the vital contributions of blood technicians to our life-saving mission. Among these extraordinary individuals is Jailen Butler, whose dedication ensures the safe and efficient collection of life-saving blood while continuing his family’s Red Cross legacy.
Inspired by his mother, a phlebotomist of 16 years, Butler has embraced the mission of saving lives through both his work in blood collection and his own personal blood donations.
Growing up, Butler often accompanied his mother to blood drives, witnessing firsthand the profound impact of her work. Beginning her career on mobile blood drives and later transitioning to a blood donation center, her unwavering commitment left a lasting impression. Watching her dedication inspired Butler to follow in her footsteps. When the opportunity arose to become a certified phlebotomist, Butler eagerly embraced it.
Butler’s passion for providing life-saving care shines through his professionalism and dedication to patient well-being. During a recent blood drive, a donor experienced a reaction, prompting Butler to respond swiftly by monitoring her vitals and ensuring her safety. The donor later praised his compassion and expertise, personally sharing her gratitude with his manager.
“She specifically mentioned how well I helped her and made sure she was taken care of. That recognition meant so much to me,” Butler reflected.
