William “Bill” Foisel, 95, has become a staple at the American Red Cross blood drives his Antelope Valley church regularly hosts. His journey of generosity began in the early 1950s, when he saw a blood drive flyer and thought, “Why not?” It was a time when blood was desperately needed for soldiers and Bill felt a strong pull to contribute. According to Bill, back then, his blood donations were inspired by and rewarded with ten dollars and a shot of beer. Bill knew that donating was a simple act with the power to save lives and from that moment on, he made it a regular habit. Today, his motivations to donate have shifted, but Bill's commitment to helping others remains unwavering.
“I am healthy, and giving blood is something I can do,” Bill shared with a humble smile. “I can donate, so I do it. I like to help people, and I feel good after every donation.”
Bill recently marked his 271st donation with a special milestone: donating on his 95th birthday. The church, where he has donated for years, threw a party in his honor, complete with cupcakes, balloons and heartfelt gifts. His son, David, who accompanied him to the donation, also participated, continuing the family tradition of giving back.
Blood donations are allowed every 56 days, which means Bill can donate up to six times a year. Despite his age, Bill continues to meet the basic requirements: being in good health, feeling well and weighing at least 110 pounds. There’s no age limit for donating blood, though different states have varying rules. As long as Bill is healthy and eligible, he will keep coming back.
“I’ve always believed in giving,” Bill says. “It’s my way of doing my part, even if it's just one pint at a time. And after a donation, a shot of beer is the perfect way to celebrate!”
What’s even more incredible is that Bill doesn't just donate for the sake of it—his donations help save lives. Each pint of blood can save up to three lives and Bill’s 271 donations have undoubtedly touched hundreds of people. His ongoing commitment is a reminder that every pint counts, no matter your age.
