Last January, James Burkett took STOP THE BLEED® training through the American Red Cross Long Beach and South Bay Chapter. STOP THE BLEED® is one of our nation’s largest public health campaigns, with a goal to save lives by training people across the country how to stop traumatic bleeding.
Later that very same day, James and his wife were on a bike ride when they happened upon another bicyclist who had just been hit and injured by a car.
The man’s foot was bleeding profusely, so James jumped into action and applied the training he had received earlier that day. James applied pressure using his own shirt and with that action, helped control the bleeding.
The injured man’s wife had been on an extended hold with 911, so she and James’ wife walked to a nearby fire station and asked the fire personnel for help.
Once the paramedics arrived and stabilized the injured cyclist, his wife shared with James how impressed she was that he remained calm and knew exactly what to do. James explained it was all on account of the critical training he had received earlier that very same day.
