LOS ANGELES, December 28, 2025 – Effective immediately, Red Cross LA has closed its shelters at West Ranch High School (26255 Valencia Blvd, Stevenson Ranch, CA 91381), Santa Anita Family YMCA (501 Mountain Ave, Monrovia, CA 91016), Marie Kerr Recreation Center (2723-A W. Rancho Vista Blvd, Palmdale, CA 93551 - Antelope Valley) and Stoner Recreation Center (1835 Stone Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90025). Residents affected by the atmospheric river and in need of shelter assistance can call Red Cross at 800-675-5799.

Red Cross emergency shelters are designed to meet the immediate, short-term needs of impacted residents until long-term efforts can get underway. The Red Cross also plays a critical role in helping families and communities recover in the weeks and months after a disaster.  

For the past week, Red Cross LA mobilized local disaster workers – 90 percent of which were volunteers – to help neighbors affected by the atmospheric river flooding and mudflow, and with support from community partners it: 

• Opened four shelters 
• Provided five overnight stays 
• Served more than 435 meals

This atmospheric river is a reminder of the importance of being prepared for disasters big and small. The Red Cross offers these safety tips you should follow:

STAYING SAFE DURING STORMS

• Register for emergency updates from your local government or emergency response agencies. Download the free Red Cross Emergency App, which you can customize to receive local weather alerts, access preparedness information, Red Cross shelter locations and more.  
• Understand the types of flood alerts that you may receive and have a plan to respond: A WATCH means Be Prepared! A watch means a flood or flash flood is possible. A WARNING means Take Action! A warning means flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon. Take immediate precautions! 
• Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Just 6 in (15 cm) of fast-moving floodwater can knock you over, and 12 in (30 cm) can carry your vehicle away. 
• If you evacuated, wait for officials to say it is safe before going home. 
• Avoid fallen power lines, poles, and wires. They can electrocute you. Watch out for falling trees and other debris. 
• Stay away from floodwaters. They may contain sewage, sharp items, and chemicals that can make you ill. 
• Take care of yourself. You can contact the Disaster Distress Helpline for free if you need to talk to someone. Call or text 1-800-985-5990.
