"Since the fire started and the tragedy came to Pasadena, we have tried to help people with food, water, and even shelter,” said Pastor Obed Simite. “I know the American Red Cross being here helps our community, our church and the people around us."
A steady stream of people flowed through Familia Cristiana Bethel Church in Pasadena, California, many greeting each other like old friends, pausing to chat and catch up. In the sunny courtyard, a few tables sat beneath canopies, offering shade from the clear skies. At one table, a plate of pastries rested beside two Red Cross volunteers, each focused on a laptop, ready to assist those in need.
Simite serves a primarily Spanish-speaking congregation, offering both spiritual guidance and material support.
As disasters become more frequent—nearly doubling in major relief operations annually compared to a decade ago—the Red Cross continues to prioritize building strong partnerships with local organizations. These relationships, fueled by the generosity of donors nationwide, enable the Red Cross to provide emergency supplies, shelter, financial assistance, and more to those affected by disasters like the recent wildfires.
Navidad Luna, a Red Cross volunteer for nearly a decade, traveled from Corpus Christi, Texas, to assist with the wildfire response in Los Angeles County. Specializing in community engagement and partnerships, he helped connect the Red Cross with the church.
“The Red Cross is here to help everyone, but we don’t want anyone left out,” said Navidad. “That’s why we seek out partners—people who can guide us to the communities that need help the most.”
The goal is not only to provide immediate relief but also to strengthen local organizations, increasing their capacity to support even more people when the next disaster strikes.
When the Eaton Fire tore through the area, Familia Cristiana Bethel stepped in to provide food, water, and shelter to an estimated 50 people who lost their homes. Local organizations often have deep-rooted connections and unique insight into their communities' specific needs—knowledge that helps the Red Cross provide more effective support.
On this sunny afternoon, the primary need was clear: helping Spanish-speaking residents navigate the process of applying for Red Cross disaster financial assistance.
Juana Flores, a fluent Spanish speaker from Alhambra, California, stepped up to help. After the wildfires broke out, she signed up as a Red Cross volunteer. Now, during only her third shift, she assisted residents in completing online financial assistance applications.
"I just wanted to help my community in any way I can,” said Juana. “It feels amazing to connect with the Latino population and make sure they get the information and support they need.”
Through partnerships, dedicated volunteers, and a shared commitment to service, the Red Cross and organizations like Familia Cristiana Bethel are ensuring that no one faces disaster alone.
