Changing Summer Conditions:
The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) recently published the latest seasonal weather outlook. The outlook for this summer continues to reflect warmer and drier than average conditions.
Weather statistics for Western Washington reflect this trend of longer and hotter summers. In the 20th century for example, Seattle averaged only 3 days per year reaching 90 degrees or more. So far this century, that average has risen to 5 days per year, and in just the last 10 years, the average number of days hitting 90 degrees or more is now 8 days per year.
Eastern Washington typically experiences wildfire risk earlier in the summer, while Western Washington conditions tend to worsen as vegetation dries out over time.
Dry conditions mean it is especially important to follow fire safety guidelines and avoid activities that could spark a fire.
So when camping, hiking, and any other outdoor activities, be sure to do everything possible to help avoid any fires beyond campsite fire pits. Authorities emphasize ensuring campfires are cold before leaving the campground. The American Red Cross also recommends taking a Red Cross first aid course where you can learn how to treat sprains, blisters, broken bones, insect bites and more. Those skills could come in handy during your trip.
Also download the Red Cross app that includes the Emergency app for severe weather and emergency alerts.
In addition, the Red Cross First Aid app provides quick to know information on how to treat common ailments and injuries. All Red Cross apps are available at redcross.org/apps or search American Red Cross in your favorite app store.
Enjoy a safe, memorable and enjoyable camping experience this summer. Being prepared in advance will enhance your trip.
