San Francisco, Calif., Monday, October 13, 2025 - The American Red Cross is proud to announce the appointment of Justin Mueller as the new Regional Chief Executive Officer of the organization's Northern California Coastal Region. In this new role, Mueller will also serve as the Executive Director for the Bay Area Chapter, one of five chapters in the region he now leads.
Mueller joined the American Red Cross in 2006 and has worked in various positions within the region including most recently serving as the Regional Blood Donor Services Executive. He was responsible for ensuring that the region collected enough red blood cell products safely and efficiently to supply the needs of hospitals and the community at large. The Red Cross is the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the United States and thus plays a leading role in protecting the safety of donors and patients.
“What makes this region so special is not only the communities we serve but also the extraordinary volunteers, staff, donors and partners who bring our mission to life every day,” said Mueller. “It’s an honor to step into this new role and I’m excited about all that we will achieve together.”
Mueller, who took the helm starting October 13, oversees an operation that includes over 8,100 volunteers and 60 employees. This combined workforce responds to more than 860 local disasters each year; educates residents on home fire safety and emergency preparedness; supports the annual collection of approximately 147,000 units of blood at more than 4,100 local blood drives; trains more than 77,000 people in lifesaving skills such as CPR and AED training; educates more than 4,780 individuals on international Humanitarian Law; delivers aid to international Red Cross partners and those affected by emergencies across the globe; and provides services to more than 8,300 active duty service members, veterans, and their families.
“Justin’s deep understanding of the Red Cross mission and his long-standing commitment to the people we serve make him an outstanding leader for our region,” said Kenzie Ferguson, Board Chair for the Red Cross Bay Area Chapter. “His track record of collaboration, innovation and compassion will continue to strengthen our impact across Northern California. We are thrilled to welcome him into this new role.”
Justin is a regular whole blood, platelet and plasma donor and has personally donated 245 units of blood products. He is actively involved in the work and mission of the church and enjoys volunteering. He values balance in life and achieves it by spending quality time with his family and enjoying the great outdoors.
The Northern California Coastal Region serves more than 10 million people throughout 15 counties. The Bay Area Chapter serves Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties; the North Bay Chapter serves Marin, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties; the Silicon Valley Chapter serves Santa Clara County; the Heart of the Valley Chapter serves Merced, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties; and the Central Coast Chapter serves Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties.
