The American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region is honored to partner with the Big Sur Marathon Foundation (BSMF) to support two of California’s most scenic and celebrated running events: the Monterey Bay Half Marathon and the Big Sur International Marathon.

🚑 Deploying CPR-Trained Volunteers: Our team of trained CPR/AED/First Aid volunteers will be on-site to help ensure the safety and well-being of runners and spectators.

Distance: 13.1 miles
Time Limit: 3.5 hours (16-minute-per-mile pace
Dubbed California’s Best Half-Marathon, the Monterey Bay Half Marathon features an out-and-back course that begins in historic downtown Monterey, winds past Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, and hugs the stunning Pacific Grove shoreline. Runners enjoy breathtaking views of crashing waves, Victorian-era homes, and local wildlife like sea otters and pelicans. The race finishes at the Custom House Plaza–Monterey State Historic Park, where participants celebrate with live music, refreshments, and a unique hand-painted ceramic finisher’s medal.

The Big Sur International Marathon is a bucket-list race known for its challenging terrain and awe-inspiring views. The point-to-point course runs along California’s iconic Highway 1, from Big Sur to Carmel, offering runners a dramatic backdrop of redwoods, rugged cliffs, and the Pacific Ocean. Highlights include the climb up Hurricane Point and the famous Bixby Bridge, where a tuxedoed pianist serenades runners mid-race. The marathon is USATF certified and a Boston Marathon qualifier.
