Red Crossers Colin Clover, Ziya Dikhan, Mary Lee and Penny Mount greeted veterans at the Santa Clara County Stand Down.

Colin Clover comes from a military family. When asked how many of his family members are in the Armed Forces he said, “Too many to mention!” Although he didn’t go into the service himself, he wondered how to support people like his grandfather, cousins, aunts and uncles who had served in the Armed Forces.
Then he found out about the Service to the Armed Forces work of American Red Cross and he had found a way to help. First, he was a volunteer and now he is an employee working as a program specialist for Service to the Armed Forces and International Services.
Charles Jackson, U.S. Navy veteran, stopped by the Red Cross booth.
Colin recently attended the Santa Clara County Stand Down where the Red Cross partnered with community and government agencies for a free three-day event to provide services and support to all veterans and their families.
The 2024 event was held from Oct 2 to 4, at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in Northern California. Veterans who attended had access to hot meals, showers, haircuts, medical and dental care and government services all in one location. Red Cross volunteers and staff members from Service to the Armed Forces provided toiletries, blankets, clothing, drinks and good company to all visitors. Colin was joined by Red Crossers Liz Dietz, Ziya Dikhan, Penny Mount, Nathan Todd, Mary Lee, Sabrina Melton, Kay Ammon, Prapoorna Garimella, Ebony Jean Daniel and Franci Collins.
According to Michael Reclusado, veteran of the US Marine Corps, the veterans who attended not only enjoyed the free “goodies” but also had the opportunity to make new connections. “I meet different vets,” Michael said. “Today I met a new guy…I made a new friend today.” Charles Jackson, a U.S. Navy Veteran, also saw some comrades. “I see some of the guys wearing a Navy hat like me,” Charles said. The veterans also had access to services from many levels of government and various organizations.
Bien Tran, a U.S. Army Veteran, said these types of events are important because some veterans really need extra support. “Some of them are definitely down on their luck,” he said.
Colin explained the importance of the events. He said, “The American Red Cross supporting Stand Downs gives our team the opportunity to give back to the community that served our country. Especially for veterans who serve as Red Cross volunteers. Gratitude is felt by everyone when we give back to people in need.”
The Red Cross attends Stand Down events across Northern California as part of its commitment to helping members of the military, veterans, their families and caregivers, prepare for, manage and respond to the challenges of service.
