More than 100 American Red Cross disaster volunteers continue to support victims of late December’s Marshall Fire, Colorado’s most destructive wildfire in history. The blaze torched more than 6,000 acres, forced the evacuation of some 35,000 people and destroyed nearly 1,000 homes.
The fast-moving Marshall Fire is the latest example of an extreme weather event prompting thousands of people to flee their homes and seek help — this time months after the regular wildfire season ended. While the exact cause of the blaze is unknown, experts report climate change played a key role. Record warmth and extreme drought, intensified by climate change, created ideal conditions for the devastating blaze which was further fueled by violent winds gusting to more than 100 mph.
RED CROSS RESPONSE The Red Cross has distributed hundreds of relief items and provided more than 1,500 individual care contacts to help people with medical or disability needs, as well as emotional and spiritual support. The Red Cross is working very closely with the entire response community — government agencies, community groups and others — to coordinate emergency relief and recovery efforts.
The Red Cross has also provided financial assistance to almost 1,600 people impacted by the fire. This financial support is intended to be a bridge to cover emergency needs until survivors can access other resources, such as insurance, community services or other forms of federal disaster assistance.
