As we commemorate the one-year milestone of the pandemic, we also mark a year of tremendous generosity where millions of volunteers have rolled up a sleeve to help patients in need. Blood donations remain essential to the health of our communities and the American Red Cross is grateful for the ongoing support of blood donors and blood drive hosts during a year unlike any other in our history.
Throughout the pandemic, the Red Cross has adapted its collection of lifesaving blood products to overcome challenges presented by COVID-19 to meet the needs of all patients.
From implementing new safety precautions at blood drives and antibody testing on donated blood products to creating a new donor initiative for a COVID-19 convalescent plasma program to support treatment of COVID-19 patients, it’s been an incredible year. Dedicated and selfless individuals helped the Red Cross fulfill its mission in new ways.
As we look back at a year like no other, we celebrate the remarkable people who made a difference through the Red Cross. We invite you to learn more about our COVID-19 response and read some of these amazing Red Cross mission highlights on our interactive Biomedical Services COVID_19 Story Map
