The American Red Cross is on the ground in Wisconsin where a powerful EF3 tornado struck the cities of Appleton and Menasha earlier this week, causing extensive damage.

Early reports indicate as many as 300 homes are either destroyed or have received major damage. Red Cross disaster teams have a shelter open in Menasha to provide those affected with a safe place to stay. Hundreds of people have also come to the shelter to get information and access to emergency services.

Red Crossers are also providing meals and snacks, distributing emergency supplies and supporting damage assessment which will help decide what assistance is needed in the coming days and weeks.

NEED A SHELTER? You can find shelters by visiting redcross.org, using the free Red Cross Emergency app or by calling 1-800- RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). You can also check with local officials and monitor local news for information on where to get help.

Anyone who has been affected is welcome to stop by a shelter for a hot meal, to charge their phone and get other support. We don’t ask for identification, and you don’t have to stay overnight. If you are coming to a shelter, if possible, bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, other comfort items and important documents with you. Don’t forget any special items for family members, pets or children, such as diapers, formula and toys.

AFTER THE TORNADO Following are steps people should take to help keep them safe:

• Keep listening to radio, TV or other news sources.
• Do not enter damaged buildings.
• If the building has been damaged, exit with extreme care and stay out. Look around for things that might fall or dangerous debris. Do not use matches or lighters inside. If you smell gas or see spills that could be flammable, leave immediately.
• Watch out for exposed nails and broken glass.
• Stay clear of fallen power lines or broken utility lines. 
• Be careful during clean-up. Wear thick-soled shoes, long pants and work gloves to reduce injuries.
• Children should not take part in disaster cleanup work.
• If power is out, use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns to reduce fire risk.
• Be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not use gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, basement, garage, tent or camper — or even outside near an open window. Carbon monoxide can’t be seen or smelled, but it can kill you fast. If you start to feel sick, dizzy or weak, get to fresh air right away — do not delay.
