Emergency Relief: $66 mil

In the immediate aftermath of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck outside Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010, the American Red Cross joined the global Red Cross network to provide food, water, basic household goods and emergency medical care. As one example, ready-to-eat-meals were provided to survivors, like Etienne Radine and Louis Anouse, by the American Red Cross.

Shelter: $173 mil

In addition to providing more permanent shelter solutions, retrofitting homes and repairing infrastructure, training has been provided to construction workers on safer building practices that will make houses more resistant to natural disasters.

Health: $73 mil

American Red Cross has helped repair, construct and operate eight hospitals and clinics, including partial funding of Mirebalais University Hospital.

Cholera Prevention: $25 mil

In the months following the earthquake, Haiti was struck with an outbreak of cholera. Working with local and international authorities, the American Red Cross has reached more than 3.5 million Haitians to combat the threat of cholera. Prevention efforts include vaccinations, water purification tablets, as well as distribution of oral rehydration tablets.

Water & Sanitation: $47 mil

We’ve helped ensure that families have access to clean water and sanitation systems, as well as large scale public education campaigns that encourage safe hygiene.

Livelihoods: $48 mil

We seek to improve household and community stability through savings programs, conditional loans and vocational training. One example is a program for entrepreneurs that helps hone business and marketing skills through training and support.

Disaster Preparedness: $56 mil

The American Red Cross has helped families create customized emergency plans, so they can be ready to evacuate their homes in case of hurricanes, tropical storms or other emergencies.
