These American Red Cross volunteers are helping at one of two Red Cross managed shelters in Anchorage, Alaska. The Red Cross is supporting the state of Alaska in one of the largest airlifts in the state’s recent history, evacuating entire villages left in ruins by Typhoon Halong. Over the weekend, several hundred evacuees from the villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok were staying in the shelters.

Residents have no power or running water, food they had stored for the winter is ruined and stoves used to heat their homes damaged.

Help people affected by disasters big and small — whenever and wherever they occur

WASHINGTON, October 24, 2025 — Hundreds of American Red Cross disaster volunteers are in Alaska to support the people who lost everything when their communities were devastated by Typhoon Halong.

This could be a prolonged relief response with access to some villages cut off and others left uninhabitable as Alaska’s winter sets in. A disaster of this magnitude requires a team effort.  We are working closely with many partners at the national and local level to address the needs of the affected communities and we will work closely with FEMA to help evacuees in Alaska recover after the recent typhoon.

Emergency responders warn that some villages may need to be completely rebuilt, that it could take up to 18 months before some families can return — if at all. Delivering building materials poses a major challenge with winter ice setting in, bringing barge deliveries to a halt.

RED CROSS RESPONSE The Red Cross and partners are providing shelter, food, emergency relief supplies and other relief services.

Red Crossers are supporting evacuees who were airlifted to shelters in Anchorage after the storm left many homes uninhabitable. For the Red Cross and partners, one of the top priorities is finding housing for those affected. The Red Cross is also deploying disaster teams to impacted villages to deliver relief supplies, especially non-traditional goods, before winter sets in.

To help cover urgent expenses, the Red Cross is also offering financial assistance to impacted households. Financial assistance can help eligible households with urgent needs like clothing, lodging and transportation, to longer-term essentials like securing new housing and making home repairs.
