What motivated you to start a fundraiser for the Red Cross?
I had participated in a previous challenge, and I wanted to raise awareness among my Facebook friends and the Red Cross community about the ongoing need for support. After undergoing triple bypass heart surgery in October, walking 100 miles during winter was a meaningful personal goal, and the timing of the Facebook Challenge aligned perfectly with my recovery and fitness goals.
What is your connection to the Red Cross?
I’ve been volunteering with the Red Cross as a Disaster Action Team volunteer for nearly eleven years, after retiring from the high-tech industry. I’ve deployed for large-scale disaster relief operations and now help run the Disaster Action Team program as a volunteer partner.
What did you enjoy most about fundraising for the Red Cross?
I enjoyed the challenge itself. Despite snow and rain, I stayed committed to my daily goal, using the weather as a motivator rather than an obstacle. Plus, my dog loved joining me on the walks.
What are your top fundraising tips for future participants?
- Share your personal connection to the goal - it encourages more donations.
- Always personally thank your donors.
- Don’t be afraid to raise your goal mid-challenge to keep momentum and inspire additional contributions.
