September 25, 2018. Cumberland Baptist Church, Hope Mills, North Carolina. Volunteer DeAndrea Fuller has a heartwarming story of selfless service. From St. Augustine, Florida with four children, she honorably served in the United States Navy for over 20 years. Proud of her role as Deputy Legal Advisor to the NATO Commander in Afghanistan, and a teacher of International Humanitarian Law, DeAndrea recently retired from the Navy in July. Now, she spends her time volunteering with the Red Cross and went on her first deployment to North Carolina just two weeks ago for Hurricane Florence. “I served my country so I could help people, now that I am retired, I serve for the American Red Cross.” She is currently getting trained in different specialties within the Red Cross so she can go on more deployments in the future. Zoey, a 7-year-old Boston Terrier Chihuahua mix, snuggles up in a cozy Red Cross blanket during a photoshoot. Zoey was rescued by Amanda, a Regional Coordinator, SRR for the Michigan Region. Zoey has quickly become a valuable member of Amanda's family and a big fan of cozy Red Cross blankets.

Emerald Isle, North Carolina, September 7, 2019. American Red Cross volunteer Bob Wallace inspects the destruction inflicted on the Boardwalk RV park on Emerald Isle, North Carolina. As Hurricane Dorian advanced on the Island on September 5 waterspouts were formed, one of which did massive damage to the RV park.

American Red Cross volunteerism often becomes a family affair. Sometimes even family pets get involved. This is Anubis, whose owner is an American Red Cross Disaster Workforce Engagement Manager in Michigan. Anubis donned his owner's Red Cross disaster vest before striking a pose in front a Disaster Action Team vehicle. We can only imagine that responding to disasters on a cold, winter day in Michigan must be 'ruff' but American Red Cross volunteers are known for their 'dogged' determination to get the job done!

Red Cross volunteer speaks with a shelter resident and her dog, Angel. A native resident to Jacksonville, NC, the path for her to return home is still plagued by road closures, flooded streets, down trees and power lines. Although updates are few and far between, she is hopeful that her home and possessions are untouched by Hurricane Florence when she is allowed to return. The Red Cross shelter is pet friendly through a partnership with a local veterinary school and doctor. This shelter resident is wheelchair bound following a major medical emergency with her hip several years ago. Through a team of dedicated volunteer nurses and doctors any medical assistance she may need has been met with a professional who is able to assist.
