Red Cross Volunteer Robin “Kamalei” Anderson surveys damage to a home on Hawaii Island.
HONOLULU (JUNE 10, 2026) — The American Red Cross quickly responded to the recent earthquake in Hawai‘i County, mobilizing resources to assist the hardest-hit communities between Hōnaunau-Nāpōʻopoʻo and Kona Paradise. After receiving numerous calls on Saturday, May 23, Red Cross Disaster Assessment teams went into the field the very next day to deliver urgent support and begin conducting evaluations to determine the extent of damage.
To ensure coverage for all those impacted, additional Disaster Assistance volunteers from neighboring islands joined local teams on the Big Island. In total, three Disaster Assistance teams completed nearly four dozen site surveys. Over a two-week period, thirty-three Red Cross volunteers and staff from the Big Island, Oahu, Kauai, and supporting personnel from California, Washington, and Alabama, coordinated the response efforts.
Red Cross Distribution of Emergency Supplies teams provided cleanup kits and other essential items to families in need. The Red Cross worked closely with Hawai‘i County officials to ensure that severely damaged homes were properly assessed, and residents received the necessary support and referrals for further assistance.
On May 28, a Community Preparedness Education Program team member participated in the Hawai‘i County mayor’s outreach event in Captain Cook. Here, the Red Cross engaged with earthquake-affected residents, providing vital information and resources. This outreach effort increased community awareness and led to several impacted individuals calling the Red Cross helpline. Their needs were then promptly addressed by Disaster Assistance teams.
The Red Cross remains dedicated to supporting Hawai‘i County residents as they recover and rebuild. Those affected are encouraged to contact 1-800-RED-CROSS for assistance.
