We Respect Your Privacy

The American Red Cross is committed to respecting the privacy of its financial and in-kind donors, whether the donation is made online, by mail, or any other method. When you make a financial or in-kind donation, you provide your name and contact information. Financial donors provide standard payment information including, in many circumstances, credit card data. We protect your information in a variety of ways, as described below.

We use industry standard safeguards to protect your information. Many donors use credit cards for donations. We protect the security of credit card transactions using a number of measures such as encryption, access controls, network firewalls, and physical security. These measures make it extremely difficult for anyone to intercept the credit card information you send to us. When we work with other companies to process credit card transactions, those companies also use encryption and other appropriate security measures.

We do not sell, share or trade our donors’ personally identifiable information with any other entity, except as described in this statement.

How We Use Service Providers

The Red Cross works with vendors that assist with processing and managing donations and donor data. We give these vendors access to donor data only as needed to perform these services. Our vendors are bound by strict confidentiality obligations and are permitted to use donor data only to support Red Cross operations.

Data Sharing to Support Our Mission

To efficiently grow our family of financial supporters, the American Red Cross may participate in certain collaborative activities, such as Information Exchanges with Data Cooperatives and List Exchanges with Other Nonprofit Organizations, both standard practices among nonprofit organizations. These activities are strictly limited to the personal information of financial donors, such as basic contact details and donation history. We do not include the information of individuals who have made only in-kind donations.

Information Exchange with Data Cooperatives. We may share your information with trusted data cooperatives. These cooperatives pool supporter data to help members identify new prospective donors and deepen relationships with existing ones. In exchange, we gain insights and the ability to reach individuals likely to support our humanitarian mission. We participate only in cooperatives whose members are vetted nonprofit or charitable organizations, and that:

  • Prohibit other members from seeing that you are a Red Cross supporter;

  • Do not give any other member direct access to the information we provide; and

  • Agree to remove and destroy data we contributed if or when we leave the cooperative.

List Exchanges with Other Nonprofit Organizations. We may share financial donor contact information with other nonprofit, nonpartisan organizations on a one-time-use basis, either for a fee or in exchange for a similar list of their supporters. This allows us to reach a wider audience at a lower cost. To protect your privacy, these exchanges are conducted through secure vendors. The other organization does not directly receive your information unless you choose to respond to their communication.

We will not send mailings to our donors on behalf of other organizations unless you have given us specific permission to do so.

Your Choices

You may opt out of having your information used in the ways described under "Data Sharing to Support Our Mission" at any time by contacting us at DonorCare@redcross.org (please include "opt-out" in your subject line) or by submitting a request to opt out of information sharing here.

When you opt out, we will suppress your information from future cooperative contributions and list exchanges. Please note, your opt-out takes effect on a going-forward basis and may take a reasonable period to process; information already shared on a one-time basis before we receive your request cannot be recalled. This opt-out is separate from unsubscribing from Red Cross communications.

For more information about the Red Cross's commitment to privacy, including how to unsubscribe from Red Cross communications, please see our Privacy Policy.
