You can be a shelter hero!

Join your neighbors to provide food, shelter, comfort and care for your community when a hurricane or other major disaster strikes. With a few hours of training, you can gain preparedness skills that will keep your family safe and your community resilient. Your compassion and our humanitarian mission are essential to overcome increasing threats and destruction from natural disasters.

Shelter heroes are part of a roster of American Red Cross volunteers in your community who are trained and prepared to help their neighbors when a major catastrophe strikes. Natural disasters like hurricanes and wildfires are occurring more frequently with greater intensity. Your community needs compassionate people like you to meet that growing challenge.

Expectations

Available at least once a year for a concentrated, flexible time period to volunteer to help others in your community after a major disaster like a hurricane.*
Participate in training for roles to help people with emergency sheltering, meal delivery and other essentials before, during and after a disaster.
A personal drive to make your community stronger and safer for everyone in need.

Resources

The Red Cross provides in-person and virtual training for various disaster relief roles as a shelter volunteer.
Various connections to other Red Cross preparedness resources like CPR, first aid and more.
You and your family will also be connected to resources like sheltering, meals and more like others who have been affected by a large-scale disaster.
