Disaster Volunteer Storytelling Social Media Guide

Do:

• Get consent. Always ask for permission and get signed release forms before photographing or filming individuals. Only share photos, videos, and information of people that have provided written consent on our Likeness and Information Release.
• Be mindful of your background. Ensure no sensitive information, damaged property, individuals without signed release forms, or unrelated brands/logos are visible.
• Focus on action and impact. Capture moments when you’re prepared to respond — your deployment bags packed, red vest on, and ready at the airport, and moments of service —volunteers helping, supplies being distributed, or safe shelter environments.
• Use Red Cross branding. Wear your vest or shirt when possible to show affiliation.
• Review the Social Media Guidelines for Red Cross Employees and Volunteers. If you have any questions, reach out to your local communications team.

Don’t:

• Don’t photograph or film restricted or unsafe areas. Avoid taking photos or videos of disaster damage unless the area is open to the public and you’ve received approval from the Public Affairs team.
• Don’t speak on behalf of the Red Cross. Share your personal experience, not organizational positions.
• Don’t alter or add AI-generated footage.
