Tropical Storm Lane has moved away from Hawaii but rain from the storm continues to fall on some parts of the islands. The American Red Cross remains on the ground in Hawaii helping people affected by the storm.
Early measurements show more than 46 inches of rain fell on some areas of the Big Island, the third highest storm total rainfall from a tropical cyclone in the United States since 1950. Many roads remain blocked by debris, flood waters and mudslides, especially on Maui, where Lane’s winds downed power lines and led to at least 3 damaging wildfires.
Working with government partners, the Red Cross will focus on comprehensive damage assessment on the islands now that the storm has passed.
Only two evacuation centers remain open with 33 people spending Saturday night. Hundreds of Red Cross disaster workers provided almost 3,000 overnight shelter stays during the storm. Red Cross mental health and health services professionals provided more than 2,000 services to evacuees. More than 698,000 weather alerts (hurricane watches and hurricane, tropical storm and flash flood warnings) have been issued via Red Cross mobile apps since August 21.
AFTER THE HURRICANE
- If evacuated, return only when authorities say it is safe to do so.
- Let friends and family know you’re safe - Register yourself as safe on the Safe and Well website
- Continue listening to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio for updated information and instructions.
- Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding.
- Stay out of any building that has water around it.
- Keep away from loose or dangling power lines. Report them immediately to the power company.
- Do not use water that could be contaminated to wash dishes, brush teeth, prepare food, wash hands, make ice or make baby formula.
- Watch animals closely and keep them under your direct control.
- Help people who may need assistance—infants, elderly people, those without transportation, large families who may need additional help in an emergency situation, people with disabilities, and the people who care for them.
