In the diverse and dynamic environment of the American Red Cross, Deivid Ocampo stands as a pivotal figure, bridging the language gap with his unique skills as a Senior Spanish Translator. His journey with the Red Cross is not just about volunteering; it's a story of breaking barriers and connecting communities.
Deivid's story begins with a personal challenge – mastering the English language at the age of 41. This experience shaped his understanding of the crucial role language plays in humanitarian work. Now he passionately advocates for bilingual volunteers, knowing firsthand the barriers that language can create. "I identify with many Hispanic people," he says. "They want to help, but the language barrier is a significant obstacle."
Since starting in his role as a Spanish Translator/Proofreader at the Red Cross National Headquarters Multicultural Communications Department just a few months ago, Deivid has already contributed over 260 hours of volunteer service. His work goes far beyond traditional translation. Deivid has also taken training courses on Psychological First Aid, Disaster Cycle Services and Public Affairs. Additionally, he is an active member of the Latino Engagement Team. These varied roles underscore his versatility and deep commitment to the organization's diverse needs.
Reflecting on his contributions, Deivid expresses pride in his latest project: "Since I started at the Red Cross, I always wished that Volunteer Connection was available in Spanish. Now, being able to work on this project fills me with pride." His elevation to a Senior Translator/Proofreader role is a testament to his dedication and skill.
Deivid often speaks of his role model, Dr. María Luisa Piraquive, a compassionate Colombian leader and philanthropist, who overcame her humble beginnings to create a foundation supporting vulnerable communities worldwide. Her story reinforces Deivid's belief in the power of communication and education in service to others.
As Deivid explains, volunteering at the Red Cross is more than aid; it's about forming oneself as a human being and finding satisfaction in life through helping others. For him, volunteering is a way to connect cultures, languages and people, proving that compassion knows no language barrier.
Deivid Ocampo's story is a testament to the impact of bilingual volunteers. His dedication as a Senior Spanish Translator at the Red Cross highlights the importance of language inclusivity in humanitarian work. Through his efforts, he not only provides immediate aid but also fosters a more connected and understanding community.
In his final remarks, Deivid underscores a crucial need: "We need more Spanish speaking volunteers. There are so many people out there with the skills and the heart to help, but perhaps they haven't found the right path to channel their efforts. I urge anyone who has the capability, especially those who can overcome language barriers, to step forward and join us. Your contribution, no matter how small, can make a world of difference."
Deivid Ocampo's journey and his call for more volunteers remind us that each individual has the power to make a significant impact. His story is not just about the work he has done, but also about the potential for what can be achieved when more people join this noble cause.
