Effort supported more than 720 people affected by the July 2025 flooding
After the devastating flooding in Texas in July of this year, the American Red Cross provided shelter and feeding, health and mental health services, and other comfort and care to families in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.
But recovery does not end when the shelters close, and families may still be living in temporary housing or facing other ongoing challenges.
With this in mind, thanks to the generosity of Red Cross donors, the Long-Term Recovery program was able to provide an additional round of financial assistance to individuals and families who were affected by the floods, in particular those whose homes sustained major damage or were destroyed.
All told, the program provided more than $1 million in direct financial assistance to more than 720 individuals. This form of assistance, provided as a debit-style card or direct funds transfer, gives recipients the dignity and autonomy to determine what they need most.
Red Cross casework volunteers who supported the program, including those who lived in the affected region themselves, got to see firsthand how the assistance helped their community. Recipients typically used it for housing, transportation, job-related expenses, childcare, health and mental health, as well as other needs.
Maria Corral was a first-time volunteer with long-term recovery when she joined five other local volunteers at the Kerrville office to support the TX Floods Long-Term Recovery program.
She worked in sheltering, feeding, and driving emergency response vehicles before joining the team supporting long-term recovery efforts.
The throughline for her in these roles was meeting people affected by disaster where they were, to provide the help they needed at that moment. “It’s all about seeing what we can do for the people,” she said.
