The American Red Cross is responding to tornadoes and wildfires in several states as millions of people in the center of the U.S. continue to face the combined threat of flooding, tornadoes and fires ─ a situation expected to last into early next week.
MULTIPLE THREATS The National Weather Service reports severe thunderstorms will affect the weekend weather in the Plains and Mississippi Valley, storms that could cause flooding, strong winds, large hail and tornadoes. Severe storms which could cause flooding and strong tornadoes move into the Missouri Valley and upper Great Lakes region on Monday
As much as three inches of rain could lead to flash flooding from Arkansas to Mississippi. At the same time, conditions are ripe for wildfires ─ intense winds, low humidity and dry vegetation ─ with elevated to critical fire risks issued for the Plains, Midwest and Southwest states.
RED CROSS RESPONSE A tornado touched down in Enid, Oklahoma Thursday night, early reports indicating as many as 50 homes were destroyed. Red Cross disaster teams opened a shelter as soon as it was safe to do so.
Wildfire threats continue to be critical for the next several days. In South Dakota, the Redstone Wildfire continues to burn and Red Crossers supported first responders with canteen services. Fires are also burning in Florida and Georgia. Red Cross disaster workers are responding, opening and supporting shelters, ready to support any additional evacuations if necessary.
STEPS TO HELP YOU STAY SAFE If you live in the path of these storms or wildfires, these steps will help keep you and your loved ones safe:
Download the free Red Cross Emergency app for real-time alerts, expert advice in English and Spanish, and available disaster shelter and support locations.
FLOODING SAFETY During a flood, be prepared to evacuate immediately if local officials advise. Don’t return home until officials say it’s safe.
TORNADO SAFETY Find the safest location at places where you spend a lot of time. A basement or a small interior room with no windows on the lowest level of a sturdy building is best.
WILDFIRE SAFETY A wildfire can spread very quickly, leaving you little time to get to safety. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice and obey all instructions from officials.
