The American Red Cross encourages individuals to give hope to patients this summer by making an appointment to give blood or platelets. Patients like Molly Baer, of Richmond, Virginia, are counting on the generosity of Red Cross blood donors to continue donating through the summer, so she can enjoy the fun of being a little girl.
It is hard to tell Molly struggles with a blood disorder just by looking at her. She’s happy, energetic and has a smile that would make any heart melt. Molly is also proof that the gift of life helps others live. Molly lives with Beta Thalassemia Major and must undergo blood transfusions every three weeks. Going in and out of the hospital is difficult for a child, but Molly keeps her positive spirit. Her mother couldn’t be more grateful for the generosity of others.
“American Red Cross has been phenomenal for us,” said Molly’s mother Tanya Baer. “I know what her life would be without blood donations – she wouldn’t live.”
DONORS NEEDED All eligible donors are encouraged to make and keep donation appointments now to help maintain the summer blood supply and prevent a shortage.
For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets, use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given every seven days – up to 24 times a year. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
