The American Red Cross continues to support people impacted by Hurricane Isaias and July’s Hurricane Hanna as weather experts predict we could see an extremely busy hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean this year.
In their updated Atlantic forecast, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says the country could see one of the most active hurricane seasons in 22 years. The updated outlook calls for 19 to 25 named storms, 7 to 11 hurricanes and 3 to 6 major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or more.
The Red Cross is getting ready to respond to any storms that may hit the U.S. and urges everyone to get prepared too. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, getting prepared this year will be a little different. See what you should do here.
ISAIAS AND HANNA More than 1,660 Red Cross disaster workers have been working for weeks to help people affected by these hurricanes. They have provided more than 2,100 overnight stays in emergency hotel lodging and shelters and served more than 45,400 meals and snacks. In addition to providing a safe place to stay and food to eat, the Red Cross has provided health services, relief items, comfort and help as people plan their next steps. Additionally, volunteers supported evacuation shelters ahead of Hurricane Douglas and were ready to respond to needs in Hawaii.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are thankful to all our volunteers across the country who have already answered the call and continue to be ready for the next big thing. You can join them. Due to predictions for an active hurricane and wildfire season and the complexities of COVID-19, the Red Cross will need thousands of volunteers to care for people when disasters strike. Train now to be a Ready Red Cross Shelter Volunteer so you can be there when your community needs it most. Visit redcross.org/volunteertoday to learn about our most-needed volunteer positions.
