The American Red Cross announces that blood donor Manolita Gude, of Connecticut won a trip for two to Super Bowl LIV in Miami. The Red Cross and NFL teamed up to help tackle a critical need for blood and would like to extend a special thank-you to all who came to give blood or platelets from Jan. 1-19, 2020.
In addition to Super Bowl LIV tickets, Gude and a guest will receive entry to the official NFL Tailgate, tickets to Super Bowl Experience at the Miami Beach Convention Center, round-trip airfare to Miami, three-night hotel accommodations at The Alexander® - All Suite Oceanfront Resort and a $500 gift card for expenses.
The Need for Blood Doesn’t Take a Timeout
While it’s warm and sunny in Florida, winter weather and freezing temperatures continue to impact the ability to collect blood donations across the country. There is still a critical need for blood donors of all blood types.
Additionally, seasonal illnesses like the flu virus prevent donors from giving. For those that have the flu, it is important to wait until they no longer exhibit flu symptoms, have recovered completely and feel well before attempting to donate. All blood donors must feel healthy and well on the day of donation.
How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive.
