Being Prepared for Emergency Situations Critical When Camping
Camping continues to grow in popularity in the United States with more than 81 million people camping in 2024, including almost 6 million new campers. In fact, six out of 10 U.S. households identify as campers. Even as interest in camping rises, hiking is still the most popular outdoor activity.
When you’re headed to a remote area with limited access to phone service and emergency help, being prepared for a potential emergency is critical. The American Red Cross offers these five tips to help stay safe:
1. Pack a first aid kit with insect repellant, sunscreen and personal medications. A variety of first aid kits and emergency supplies are available at redcrossstore.org
2. Know the level of ability of your group and the environment around you. Plan to use hiking trails that are within your skill level.
3. Share your plans, including where you are going and when you should be back, with a family member, neighbor or friend.
4. Bring nutritious food items and plenty of water even if you don’t plan to stay overnight.
5. Wear layers of light-weight clothing, sunscreen and a hat.
Before you plan a camping trip or a hike, the Red Cross recommends taking a Red Cross first aid course so that you will know what to do in case help is delayed. You’ll learn how to treat sprains, blisters, broken bones, bites and stings and more. Being prepared in advance is the best way to protect yourself and loved ones.
Download Red Cross apps to keep vital information in your hand. The Red Cross Emergency app offers severe weather and emergency alerts, and the First Aid App provides instant information on how to treat common injuries and ailments.
