News Summary:
The American Red Cross is preparing to respond as two different storm systems threaten the Hawaiian Islands and the U.S. Territory of Guam.
In Hawaii, people are still trying to recover from the late March storms which caused catastrophic flooding as a new Kona low storm moves in. Flood watches are posted for the entire state, and severe weather with additional flooding could continue into next week.
On Guam, the focus is on a storm system which experts report could develop into a tropical cyclone. Regardless of how Invest 90W develops, it will bring strong winds and heavy rain to the region over the next several days.
RED CROSS RESPONSE Guam is an unincorporated U.S. territory and people born there are U.S. citizens. On Guam, shelters open in partnership with island Education Departments, then are taken over by local officials. The Red Cross is finalizing plans to respond quickly and efficiently, working with local and federal partners, along with community agencies.
On Hawaii, shelters are opening across the islands where Red Cross volunteers stand ready to support anyone impacted by this new storm. In addition to volunteers from the islands, a Red Cross leadership team and shelter volunteers are being deployed to Hawaii.
