Red Cross Support Continues a Month After Typhoon Haiyan

The Red Cross continues to deliver relief supplies and humanitarian assistance to hard-hit communities in the Philippines a month after Typhoon Haiyan, with relief distributions including food, clean water, and supplies.

As of December 9, the American Red Cross relief team that is part of the global Red Cross response has distributed tarps, water cans, mosquito nets and hygiene kits to approximately 44,000 people and the distribution is ongoing. The Red Cross has delivered food packages to more than 785,000 people and provided clean water to nearly 600,000 people.

A Red Cross field hospital in Ormoc continues to treat patients and as of December 10, the hospital has delivered 136 babies. Additionally, a Red Cross mobile clinic is caring for people in northern Cebu and teams are providing healthcare and emotional support in communities throughout the affected area.

The American Red Cross has already committed $16 million to the response for Typhoon Haiyan and is deploying 11 more disaster specialists, in addition to the 13 who have already been in the Philippines supporting relief efforts. The money is being used to purchase and distribute relief items such as food, blankets, hygiene kits, mosquito nets and to provide cash grants for use when markets begin functioning normally.

More than two dozen Red Cross societies across the globe are providing support to the Philippine Red Cross in logistics, disaster assessment, shelter, health, water and sanitation.
