As record flooding continues to plague the Midwest, the American Red Cross has more than 550 workers helping people in hard-hit communities across Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas and Wisconsin.
The Red Cross opened multiple shelters and provided thousands of overnight stays in the last week as people in affected communities sought a safe refuge from the floodwaters. Working with partners, Red Cross workers are also providing food, relief supplies and other support. In some areas, Red Crossers are providing refreshments to people rushing to fill sandbags and protect homes and businesses from flood waters.
Red Cross health services, mental health and spiritual care workers are present in shelters to tend to the health and well-being of flood evacuees. These workers assess health needs, provide or assist with care as needed, and replace medications, supplies and equipment that may have been lost or destroyed during the disaster. Red Cross mental health workers are helping people to cope with the devastation.
Red Cross volunteers also continue to help people affected by the deadly tornadoes and flooding that occurred earlier in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.
FIND A SHELTER If someone needs to find a shelter, they can visit redcross.org/shelter, download the free Red Cross Emergency App or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Emergency App is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.
Anyone who plans to stay in a Red Cross shelter should bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, other comfort items and important documents. Don’t forget to bring any special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, or for family members who have unique needs.
