To provide vital recovery services to Hurricane Harvey survivors, the American Red Cross awarded more than $60 million in donated dollars to support the work of non-profit and faith-based organizations addressing recovery-related humanitarian needs across the Gulf Coast. The Hurricane Harvey Recovery Grants Program has funded grants to more than 120 non-profit organizations to address the needs of the vulnerable survivors in the most impacted counties. Grant awards support work in the areas of housing repair and rebuilding; unmet needs assistance; long-term recovery committee capacity; mental health services; recovery support services; and outreach to underserved communities.
Through 48 Housing Repair grants, the American Red Cross has supported 2,918 repairs and rebuilds in 39 counties to date, returning those Harvey-damaged homes to safe and habitable standards.
Fifteen Long-term recovery groups were awarded staff capacity building grants to support effective Long-Term Recovery Committees (LTRCs) addressing Harvey-related needs in the Texas Gulf Coast Region.
Through our Unmet Needs funding, we provided 3,806 awards to 2,406 households across 23 counties. Funds have been used to assist with recovery needs as replacement of furniture and appliances, temporary housing costs, and labor/construction costs for housing rebuild work.
Through 31 grants, we have supported service provision to 73,192 individuals to date. These services include 18 school based mental health grants to provide for in school and after school programming, community recreation and summer camps focusing on resiliency and preparedness.
Many survivors lack access to the technical assistance they need to address disaster-caused needs. Red Cross funded 28 non-profits to provide legal advocacy, financial counseling, contractor fraud prevention, temporary housing, disability access and other services to make recovery accessible to all.
Fourteen grants support outreach services to help ensure that all disaster-affected households have access to recovery services. To date, 150 events have been held and 71,665 individuals have been reached.
Through the Hurricane Harvey Recovery Grants Program, the Red Cross provided significant funding to established non-profits best able to help hurricane-damaged communities address the needs of their most vulnerable residents.
The Red Cross made strategic grants to organizations with a strong track record of providing services in areas of need, including home repair; recovery supporting service providers, such as Long-Term Recovery Committees and legal advocacy groups; behavioral health services; and outreach and engagement of underserved households, including people with disabilities, the elderly, and people who cannot access government services.
A complete list of organizations and the amounts they were awarded is included below; where grantees did not spend all funds awarded, Harvey donations were reallocated either to financial assistance to survivors or grantees serving high needs households in Harvey-impacted communities.
“In addition to providing direct assistance to hurricane survivors, the Red Cross has funded our organization and others to assist families in returning their damaged homes to safe, secure, and habitable conditions. Thank you for your continual investment to help hurricane survivors still in need!”
