Interested in a great summer job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard.

Training options feature two core courses—Lifeguarding and Shallow Water Lifeguarding (available in a blended learning format)—plus optional add-on modules, including waterfront skills or waterpark skills modules. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. Digital certificate available upon successful completion of course.

Core Courses

Prerequisites: Must be at least 15 years old and pass certain swimming requirements

Course lengths:


  • Traditional in-person course format 25 hours, 20 minutes
  • Blended Learning course format 19 hours, 30 minutes in-person/7 hours 30 minutes online (27 hours)

Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding

  • Basic-level course for entry-level participants at pools or attractions with maximum water depth of 3 feet or less
  • Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding includes waterpark module skill
  • Course length: 22 hours, 30 minutes (23 hours with optional skill practice session)

Shallow Water Lifeguarding

  • Traditional in-person course format 24 hours
  • Blended Learning course format 18 hours in-person/7 hours, 30 minutes online (25 hours, 30 minutes)

Optional Add-on Modules

Prerequisite: Certification in a core course is required; however, the module may be taught at the conclusion of a core course.

Course lengths:

  • Waterfront Skills Module 5 hours, 40 minutes
  • Waterpark Skills Module 3 hours, 40 minutes
Lifeguarding Review Course +

The Review course is designed to review the lifeguarding skills and core knowledge points required to recertify in lifeguarding.

Prerequisite: Current Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED or Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate Note: If the Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate is expired, participants must take the full Lifeguarding or Shallow Water Lifeguarding course.

Course lengths:

  • Lifeguarding Review Course 12 hours, 50 minutes
  • Shallow Water Lifeguarding Course 11 hours, 50 minutes

Lifeguard Management +

Learn how to effectively manage lifeguards and keep patrons, staff and facilities safe with this 3 ½ hour online course.

Course content includes:

  • The Lifeguard Manager’s role
  • Hiring and preparing staff
  • Injury prevention strategies
  • Emergency action plans
  • Team management
  • Risk management

This interactive course will keep you engaged with real-life scenarios to develop and test your critical thinking and decision-making skills, and it offers advice and lessons learned from a team of lifeguard management experts.

No in-person skills session is required.

Candidates who successfully complete this course receive a 2-year digital certificate.

Junior Lifeguarding +

Are you interested in lifeguarding – but not quite old enough yet? This course is designed to give 11 to 14 year olds a sneak peek into what it takes to become a great lifeguard. We cover all the basics and get you ready to enter the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program when you turn 15.

Bloodborne Pathogens Training +

This training module is designed for lifeguards, first responders, health care professionals and other workers who are at risk for on-the-job exposure to blood and body fluids that can cause infection. Course helps to meet training requirements for the OSHA bloodborne pathogens standard.

1 year certification

Digital certificate available upon successful completion of course

Course length:

  • 2 hours classroom
  • 1 hour for online course

Topics include:

  • How to help prevent exposure incidents through work practice, protective equipment, personal hygiene and proper cleaning and disinfecting of equipment


Administering Emergency Oxygen +

An advanced skills course for professional rescuers, including lifeguards, who want to improve their ability to provide care for victims of breathing emergencies. This course covers a variety of physical and mechanical tools for maintaining patient oxygen levels until more advanced medical personnel can take over.

Prerequisites: Current adult, child or infant CPR certification

2 year certification

Digital certificate available upon successful completion of course

Course length: 1 hour, 40 minutes (1 hour, 5 minutes when taught with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers)

Topics include:

  • Use of resuscitation mask
  • Use of bag-valve-mask (BVM) rescuscitator
  • Use of manual and mechanical suctioning devices (optional)
  • Administering emergency oxygen
  • Oxygen safety procedures
  • Airway management including oral (OPA) and nasal (NPA) airways (optional)
