![March 30, 2023. Amory, Mississippi. Red Cross volunteer Diane Mercado spends time with 6-year-old Laniya Buckner on Thursday at a Red Cross shelter in Amory, Miss. Shelter residents sang Mercado s praises. One resident, Davonyae Beeks, said Mercado helped get a microwave so that Beeks could heat her meals, a need because since she has generally been at work during the shelter s meal times. Another resident, Marquita Whitehead, said Mercado has gone above and beyond to entertain her two children, and others at the shelter. Whether it s playing games, finding in-demand toys like bubbles or just making them laugh through conversation, Mercado is real good with the kids, Whitehead said.
