American Red Cross New Hampshire & Vermont Region is very fortunate to receive grant funds from The J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation to provide free babysitter training in communities across Vermont. Over the past four years, 900 babysitters have been trained through this grant, with funds provided for another 250 to be trained between August 1, 2014 and July 31, 2015.
The Red Cross has partnered with youth organizations, social service agencies, schools and, more recently, community libraries to bring these vital skills to youth ages 11-15. The goal of the McClure Foundation generosity is to create opportunities for students to receive this training for which the customary course fee and locations may put this class out of reach.
In addition to new skills, the students also come to learn that they are of an age at which they can be entrusted with additional responsibilities. Participating students receive the Red Cross Babysitter Handbook, emergency reference guide, emergency contact notebook, basic first aid supplies, a first aid guide, and a CD-ROM with additional resources.
The J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation is a supporting foundation of the Vermont Community Foundation, who has been an important partner to the Red Cross in our region on the disaster relief front.
This upcoming year, we will once again look to partner with libraries to bring this course to communities, big and small, throughout Vermont. To see about your library scheduling a class and participating in this grant initiative, contact Doug Bishop at (802) 660-9130, ext. 123 or email@example.com.
