The American Red Cross strives to be a trusted partner within the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, collectively transforming locally led management of humanitarian crises around the world. Our teams build relationships, and demonstrate collaboration, commitment, compassion, creativity and credibility.
The unparalleled level of trust that people have in the Red Cross affords us access to the most remote and restricted places where other organizations may not be able to go. The neutrality and impartiality of the Red Cross is respected by governments and communities around the world and these principles are critical elements to our humanitarian work. The American Red Cross is committed to collective impact, localization and equity, ensuring that National Societies are the lead humanitarian actors in their country.
"In a world of complex issues, our greatest strength lies in returning to our foundational principles. By staying grounded in what matters most, we can drive meaningful progress and support more resilient, thriving communities."
– Cliff Holtz, President and CEO, American Red Cross
“If a family is suffering, they should be empowered to help in their recovery. For me, this means providing them the financial assistance to spend on what they need."
- Jeff Paddock, American Red Cross delegate
Through close, ongoing collaboration among its partners, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement works to address shared challenges and exchange best practices. This cooperation is reinforced through the Movement’s Statutory Meetings, which provide a formal space for collective decision-making and strategic alignment.
Every two years, the Movement convenes the General Assembly and the Council of Delegates to set priorities and adopt resolutions that guide Movement-wide action and advocacy. The General Assembly brings together the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to discuss and determine the IFRC’s priorities for the next two years. The Council of Delegates brings together all components of the Movement, 191 National Societies, the IFRC, and the ICRC, to agree on common strategies, address global humanitarian challenges, and strengthen coordinated humanitarian action.
In addition, every four years, the International Conference convenes the Movement alongside States party to the Geneva Conventions and observers. It provides a unique platform to address humanitarian needs and dignity, reaffirm the principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence, and strengthen commitment to the norms and values underpinning International Humanitarian Law and the Movement’s humanitarian work.
