Updated and released in January 2017, the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual is used by participants in the new 2017 Lifeguarding Program. This newly revised program trains lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations – both in and out of the water. Topics include water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED and more. The new program reflects the latest Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) science and contains new, quicker, and more efficient extrication techniques for removing passive victims from the water. The lifeguarding manual includes end-of-chapter review questions to help participants retain course information and prepare for the final exam.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual is rated out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Frog from Standard for non surf industry. Clearly written and illustrated. Details are precise. Well formatted sections. Two issues to revise: front passive rescue puts rescuer's hand in position to be grabbed by victim ( see cotrrect technique in previous editions); extrication has produced shoulder injuries due to one arm only being pulled by rescuer (again, see previous editions that have both arms being engaged by rescuers). Well priced for market.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Fortunateone33 from Great learning tool We used this in our lifeguard training certification course this past two weeks. While it is informative there are some updated rescue techniques, especially extractions that are a bit unwieldy. The single arm pull puts too much strain on the wrist of the victim, as well as the responder. We had two incidents where victims were dropped hard onto the groun. Most every responder felt strain in their back and every victim felt strain on their wrist and/or fingers as they slipped away from the responder. If there are updated extraction methods I would appreciate a reply. The other issue that we are having is the expense of the book. If there is any way to offer discounts to non profits or students or on a certain number of book orders that would be welcomed. I know that many of the kids taking the class to certify as a guard had s hard time with the cost of the book. Thank you!
