Advanced Life Support Participant’s Manual

This manual is a comprehensive reference textbook that provides the clinical foundation for the Advanced Life Support r.25 (ALS) program. In addition to 12 chapters that include a Basic Life Support (BLS) review and content specific to ALS, step-by-step skill sheets, reference cards and code cards are provided in this textbook. The skill sheets can be used as guides in a real-life resuscitation event and referred to during the in-person portion of the ALS class during skill practice. The reference cards and code cards can be used in a resuscitation event and during the in-person portion of the ALS class during scenario practice and testing. Successful ALS course completion is dependent on a firm understanding of the content included in this participant’s manual.

The ALS program ensures that healthcare clinicians have the requisite knowledge and skills to assess, recognize and provide care for adult patients who are experiencing a respiratory, shock, cerebrovascular or cardiovascular emergency. The course emphasizes providing high-quality patient resuscitation care as part of an interprofessional team by integrating psychomotor skills, rhythm interpretation, electrical interventions and pharmacologic knowledge with critical thinking, teamwork and problem solving to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. The participant’s manual is designed to serve as both an in-class tool and as a reference after the course is complete.

The content in this material is consistent with the 2025 evidence-based science from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), the American Red Cross Healthcare Guidelines and the most current science and treatment recommendations from the global scientific community.
